The Complete Project Process for Brand Photography
A successful brand photography job needs a well-structured process that promises seamless execution from concept to final asset delivery. Whether working with a major designer, a small business, or an emerging brand, having a clear roadmap helps bring the client’s vision to life. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the project process:
1. Initial Inquiry & Consultation
The first step begins when a client reaches out with an inquiry. This phase involves:
Understanding the client’s needs and goals.
Discussing the brand identity, target audience, and key messaging.
Determining the scope of the project: number of images, locations, models, styling, and deadlines.
Reviewing mood boards or inspiration references.
Providing an initial estimate and setting expectations.
2. Proposal & Contract
Once the requirements are clear, the next step is formalizing the agreement:
Drafting a detailed proposal including pricing, timelines, and deliverables.
Outlining terms of service, usage rights, and payment schedule.
Signing the contract to secure commitment from both parties.
3. Pre-Production Planning
This phase lays the groundwork for the shoot and includes:
Concept Development: Refining creative direction based on client feedback.
Mood Board & Shot List: Defining color schemes, lighting styles, poses, and compositions.
Team Assembly: Booking models, stylists, makeup artists, and assistants.
Location & Studio Scouting: Securing the best setting for the shoot.
Wardrobe & Prop Selection: Ensuring all necessary elements align with the vision.
Scheduling & Logistics: Coordinating shoot dates, permits, and transportation.
4. The Photoshoot
The day of the shoot is where all preparation comes to life:
Setup: Arranging lighting, backdrop, and props.
Wardrobe & Styling: Ensuring models and products are styled perfectly.
Shooting Process: Capturing images based on the planned shot list while allowing room for creative spontaneity.
Client Feedback (if on set): Making real-time adjustments based on client input. Most of the time I work remotely so the initial planning stage is the most important for me.
Backup & Storage: Immediately securing images to avoid data loss.
5. Post-Production & Editing
After the shoot, the images go through meticulous post-processing:
Selection: Narrowing down the best shots, I sometimes will release some shots that aren’t my ideal shots since everyone has different versions of “good”.
Retouching & Editing: Adjusting lighting, color grading, and refining details. I personally use a combination of Lightroom (for most of my color editing) and Photoshop (for retouching and final color adjustments).
Final Approval: Ensuring the client is satisfied with the edits before delivering the final files.
6. Delivery & Client Handoff
Once the images are finalized, they are delivered in the required formats:
High-resolution images for print and marketing materials.
Web-optimized files for e-commerce, social media, and websites.
Cloud-based delivery (Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive, etc.).
Backup recommendations, I suggest holding onto photos for up to 2 years on an external hard drive, this has been such an added value for myself and my clients as things do happen and files get deleted
7. Follow-Up & Future Collaborations
After the project is completed, maintaining client relationships is key:
Gathering feedback for continuous improvement.
Offering additional edits or resizing if needed.
Discussing future projects and potential long-term collaborations.
Showcasing the project in portfolios and case studies (with permission).
